[NYC Repipe & Repair](https://nycrepipe.com/) handles apartment repiping Upper East Side co-op boards will approve: bathroom and kitchen branch lines replaced in Type L copper back to the building riser, filed in DOB NOW and scheduled around your alteration agreement. The work covers Fifth and Park Avenue prewar buildings, Carnegie Hill side-street townhouses and Yorkville walk-ups, plus riser jobs for boards and managing agents. An apartment usually takes a few days, and you get a written, itemized price before anything is booked.

## What repiping in Upper East Side actually involves

The Upper East Side is an apartment market. Upper Fifth and Park Avenue were mansion rows until 907 Fifth Avenue, finished in 1916, became the first apartment house to replace one, and the prewar co-ops that followed now fill the [Upper East Side](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Upper_East_Side), Carnegie Hill (1974, expanded 1993) and Park Avenue (2014) historic districts. Those buildings were plumbed in galvanized steel, and above about six floors they depend on house pumps and a roof tank. The usual failure is inside one apartment: a 1920s bathroom whose galvanized branch has rusted at the threads behind tile, or a kitchen line that finally leaks into the apartment below. In most co-ops the shareholder owns those branch lines and the building owns the risers, so an [apartment repipe](https://nycrepipe.com/apartment-repiping/) stops at the riser valve and a [riser replacement](https://nycrepipe.com/riser-replacement/) is a board project.

Getting the work approved takes longer than the plumbing. Boards on Fifth, Park and East End Avenue commonly ask for an engineer's review, a certificate of insurance, set working hours and a fee for every riser shutoff; one co-op charged $1,000 per extra shutoff, so the plan groups cut-ins into as few shutdowns as possible. Some [alteration agreements](https://nycrepipe.com/answers/co-op-alteration-agreement-plumbing/) also move the cost of riser sections onto the renovating shareholder ([Habitat](https://www.habitatmag.com/Archive2/415-November-2023/Shifting-the-Burden)). Inside the Carnegie Hill and Park Avenue districts, a DOB-permitted plumbing job also needs an LPC Certificate of No Effect, even though nothing outside changes. East of Third Avenue the stock shifts to Yorkville and Lenox Hill walk-ups, including the First Avenue Estate tenement block and Treadwell Farm on East 61st and 62nd. Those run on street pressure, so a weak top-floor shower there is usually narrowed galvanized pipe, not the tank.

## Repiping in Upper East Side, answered

How much does it cost to repipe an Upper East Side apartment?

Published NYC figures put a copper apartment repipe at about $3,000 to $8,000, and supply-line replacement at $3,000 to $7,000 per unit. A one-bath prewar apartment sits near the low end; two baths plus a kitchen, tile restoration and board-required after-hours work push it toward the top. Riser sections, if your alteration agreement assigns them to you, are priced separately.

Who pays when the leak is in the riser, not my apartment?

Usually the co-op. The common split is that the building owns the risers and the shareholder owns the branch lines from the riser valve into the apartment. Check your proprietary lease and alteration agreement, though: some Upper East Side boards shift riser cost to a shareholder who is renovating and has the walls open.

Does a Carnegie Hill apartment repipe need Landmarks approval?

Usually yes, but it's a paperwork step. In the Carnegie Hill, Park Avenue and Upper East Side historic districts, interior plumbing work that needs a DOB permit generally needs an LPC Certificate of No Effect, because protected exterior features aren't touched. It runs alongside the board's review, so budget several weeks for both before the work date.
